I should say I agree with you on this. Design contests may be an option to evaluate time when you’re new to designing and you can’t find much freelance work, but after some time it feels like you’re wasting your time for nothing.

I used to do some contests on 99Designs, I say I “used” to because the staged contest thing doesn’t work for me. The whole deal with doing crowdsourcing/spec work for me is that it should be quick, dirty and easy. I don’t want to spend any more time than I have to designing something that may or may not be “accepted”, I have made the shortlisting cut on several contests and simply loose interest in spending/wasting any more time on “perfecting” something that in the end isn’t going to be viable artwork. It’s bad enough as it is, think it’s pretty ugly sucking up more of these poor peoples time.

Probably a great idea for completely inexperienced want to be’s, think it would be great project for 10th grade art class, but I won’t do it anymore.
